How we operate

Culture, rhythms, hiring, tooling — how the team actually runs.

Culture

Three sentences.

  1. Remote-first, async-first, alignment over surveillance. We hire people who finish what they start without supervision. The work, not the calendar, is the evidence.
  2. Open by default. Strategic discussion happens in writing, in places teammates can find later. Privacy exceptions exist (people, finances, unannounced partnerships) and are explicit.
  3. Curiosity, kindness, accountability. All three. Drop one and the system breaks.

We use our own product. If something is broken for us, it ships fixed before customers feel it.

Rhythms

A single page that lists every recurring obligation, by frequency. The point is to remove "what are we supposed to be doing this week?" ambiguity.

Weekly

  • Monday kickoff. 30 minutes. Goals for the week, blockers, escalations.
  • Friday review. 30 minutes. What shipped, what slipped, what we learned.
  • Engineering huddle. 45 minutes. Async-first; sync where async is slower.

Monthly

  • Last Friday release notes. The public changelog is updated by end of month.
  • Business memo. One page from the founders to the team and investors. Same words for both.
  • Customer call review. The team reads the calls together. The question we ask: what did we hear that we didn't expect?

Quarterly

  • Roadmap review. The public roadmap is rebuilt with current owners and target months.
  • Quarterly conversations. Manager ↔ teammate 1:1, structured around six prompts: current state, last quarter reflection, growth and development, collaboration and input, values and culture, manager support.
  • Compensation check. Spot review of any band that's drifted from the market.

Annually

  • Compensation review. Bands are reviewed in full against the market. Adjustments effective at the end of the cycle.
  • Handbook review. Every page is read and either revised or stamped with a fresh review date.
  • Security review. The compliance page and underlying controls get a full external pass.

Hiring

We hire slowly and write our reasoning down.

  1. Pre-application engagement is welcome. Open source contributions, public writing, and community presence are weighed.
  2. Hiring manager 1:1. A real conversation, not a screen.
  3. Practical exercise. Tied to real work. Time-boxed. Compensated for non-trivial scopes.
  4. Final round with the founders. One conversation, not a panel parade.
  5. References. We ask, we read carefully, we follow up on patterns we hear.

Compensation is transparent within bands. Equity is real. The first 90 days are a calibration period for both sides — for them and for us.

Tooling

Deliberately minimal.

  • GitHub. Code, planning, issues, public discussions.
  • Slack. Internal coordination. Default to writing things down where they will outlive the channel.
  • Linear. Product and roadmap.
  • Notion. Long-form planning that doesn't belong in a public repo.
  • Moonage. We use our own product as the core of our operations.

If a teammate wants to add a tool, the bar is one paragraph: what does this replace, what does this add, what does this cost.

Spending money

Topic-by-topic, organized by what people actually want to buy.

  • Software for your role. Approved without pre-approval if it's under the published threshold.
  • Equipment. A standard laptop and peripheral set on hire; refresh on a published cadence.
  • Books and courses. Approved up to a published per-quarter limit, no pre-approval.
  • AI tools. Per-engineer monthly budget for personal subscriptions to AI products. We learn faster when we use the field.
  • Travel. Booked through the company card. Receipts within five business days. Class of service follows a published table by leg length.
  • Team gatherings. Quarterly virtual social budget per team. In-person quarterly when geography allows.
  • Customer meetups. Separate budget track, owned by the founder doing the meeting.

Annual review

This page is reviewed every quarter by the founders. Last review: 2026-05.
